Indian Style Jewelry

What is it about the east that makes you want to throw on your pashmina and gold sandals and pretend you are some Arabian princess living a charmed life. I've always been a huge admirer of Indian/Oriental/Arabic Style jewelry. Even as a little girl, I yawned at the Tiffanys windows and loved the street vendors exotic finds.

So when I saw this extremely affordable collection of Indian Jewelry by Amrita Singh, I knew I had to share.

Sorry for being MIA...

Sadly there was a death in my family so I had to shut down for a month, but now I am back up and running :-)

I have to share with you what I have been absolutely raving about for the past few months! Now normally I am not a huge candle fan, but I recently stumbled upon these soy wax candles in a discreet eco-friendly boutiqe during a trip to Newport RI.

Let me tell you, these soy candles are hands down the best I have ever smelled. I love the chic and simple packaging and the creative scents the makers have come up with (check out absinthe and red poppy and you will know what I mean). Each candle is also freshly made when you place your order and the wick is 100% cotton.

I bought the Cedar Saffron Candle and I am hooked. At 12.98 per candle, endless scents to choose from, and with free shipping, they kick all those overpriced soy candles to the curb.

Found: Natural Beauty Products That Actually Work!!

This year I got a good perspective on how much unnecessary junk we put into and onto our bodies on a regular basis. For my New Years Resolution, I decided to try and green up my beauty and makeup routines. After a bunch of major failures, I am happy to report I found some (affordable) products that truly go the extra mile and look/work better than their synthetic counterparts...

Up First:

Also available in brown. Formulated with glyerine, beeswax, and aloe leaf extract, it goes on really smooth and lasts until you take it off. It wasn't as dramatic as many of the synthetic mascaras out there,  but I really like my eye lashes to just look more defined, not overly done and clumpy, so this definitely worked for me!

Next...

The great thing about this company is that for just 2.00, they will send you a trial kit with your choice of three foundations, a blush, and a cover veil. The colors are endless and you can definitely find a match no matter what kind of skin tone you have. I also recommend their eye shadows which last all day without running or fading away.

Next...

I am prone to break-outs, but this cleanser really balances that out with its combination of Juice and Pure Essential Oil Extracs of Geranium, Rosewood, and Ylang Ylang. Your skin won't feel tight and overdry after using, just clean.

Lastly...

This used in combination with the Juice Beauty Gel Cleanser has completely put a stop to my problem skin's unpredictable antics. My skin hasn't looked this good since pre-puberty. The pads are formulated with Salicylic Acid and Caffeine, and you get 50 pads  per jar. I find you can resuse each pad, so really you get about a 100 uses per jar.

A Skinny Girl Chicken Pot Pie

I remember when I was a little girl my Mom used to make me a nice flakey Chicken Pot Pie whenever I was really sick or down. It's definitely a classic comfort food and one of my all time favorites, until I learned the calorie count in single little pie was completely outrageous (average: 1000 calories ouch)!

Enter Cook Yourself Thin, a Best-Selling UK Cookbook turned TV Show on Lifetime. To my astonishment, they came up with a chicken pot pie recipe that has almost a quarter of the calories and doesn't skimp on taste. To replace the normal crust, the ladies substituted Phyllo Dough, which can be found in the freezer isle of most grocery stores.

Skinny Down-Home Chicken Pot Pie
Serves 6
Calories per serving: 372

3 tablespoons olive oil
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 small onion, diced
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 leek, chopped
1 large carrot, chopped
1 celery stalk
2 red potatoes, skin on, diced
2 turnips, peeled and diced
2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts cut into small cubes
2 boneless, skinless chicken thighs cut into small cubes
1 bay leaf
2 sprigs of fresh thyme
1 tablespoon salt
1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
2 1/2 cups chicken stock
6 sheets of phyllo dough
1 tablespoon olive oil, for brushing

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Thaw 6 sheets of phyllo dough overnight in the refrigerator or one hour before using. Bring the chicken stock to a simmer and keep warm.

2. In a 6-quart pot, add the olive oil and flour, and cook until lightly golden, about 3 minutes. Add the onion, garlic, leek, carrot, celery, red potato and turnips, and stir with a wooden spoon, making sure the bottom does not get too dry. Add the chicken, bay leaf and thyme, and continue stirring for about 3 minutes, so that everything is coated with the flour mixture.

3. Add the warm chicken stock, stir and scrape the bottom of the pot to get all the color into the mixture and keep it from scorching. Bring to a boil, then lower to a simmer. Let the mixture simmer, covered, for another 5 to 7 minutes, until it becomes thick and the chicken is opaque. Remove from heat and reserve.

4. Meanwhile, take 6 sheets of phyllo dough and, with a knife, cut out a square slightly larger than the rim of a 9-x-9-inch cake pan and brush with some olive oil. Set aside.

5. Remove the bay leaf and thyme sprigs from the chicken mixture and transfer the chicken to the cake pan. Top with the phyllo dough and press it down firmly with your hands. Place the pie on a baking sheet and bake in the oven at 350 degrees for 30 minutes, turning the tray around halfway through the cooking time. Remove from the oven, let cool for 10 minutes, cut into six portions and serve.

Spotlight On: Moss

It's silly, but there's just something about decorating with moss that I find so charming. Maybe it's the velvety touch and soft green coloring. Usually I like to buy vintage glass jars and fill them with my Mossy finds. However, there are some really nice ready-made and affordable Moss decorations available now on Etsy.com....

How cute is this little Irish Moss Scene? Etsy.com for 40.00
